ASDCSW to host Canada Sport for Life Information Session
 
Lethbridge, AB- The Alberta Sport Development Centre Southwest, located in Lethbridge, AB, will be hosting a Canada Sport For Life information session on Monday, February 8th, 2010 at the University of Lethbridge.
 
Canada Sport For Life is a movement to increase sport’s contribution in Canadian society and recognizing sport as an important part of everyone’s life by promoting each child’s healthy and logical development in a sport or physical activity.
 
The Long Term Athlete Development Model is a key aspect of the Canada Sport For Life model. The LTAD is an athlete-centred series of guidelines from a child’s first involvement in sport to the transition to lifelong physical activity or other sport related activities.
 
Dr Vicki Harber will be presenting. She is a professor at the University of Alberta in the Faculty of
Physical Education & Recreation and holds a cross-appointment in the Department of
Obstetrics & Gynecology. She teaches in the area of basic human and exercise physiology,
nutrition and body composition management and exercise endocrinology. In addition, Vicki is a member of Sport Canada’s “Canadian Sport for Life” team and is helping shape athlete development programs for young athletes across the country.
 
The session will take place Monday, February 8th, 2010 at the University of Lethbridge in room PE261 (7pm start). The session is open to the public for a nominal cost of $10 per person. Interested persons are asked to RSVP to info@asdcsw.ca.
 
The session will explain the CS4L as a vehicle for change that provides guidelines for age-appropriate involvement in physical activity and sport. For those individuals seeking an active and healthy life or for those determined to become the best athlete in their given sport can be supported with the CS4L guidelines. This talk will open with a brief overview of the CS4L model and describe its importance for Canadians. The talk will also provide some initial steps for implementing the CS4L model in your community along with some markers to determine the effectiveness of these initial steps.
